95Fm Christmas Message

When St. Francis of Assisi arranged for the first crib in Greccio, Italy in 1223, he certainly hit on a genial idea. Since then millions of people have set up cribs in homes and schools, hospitals and public spaces. Focussing on the crib helps us get to the real heart of the Christmas message. Yes, we can have decorations and food, fun and gifts, but to spend a little time just looking at the crib touches deep chords in us – it reawakens our deep-down dreams for peace and love, tenderness and joy.

Commenting on the crib Pope Francis has written, “By being born in a manger, God himself launches the only true revolution that can give hope and dignity to the disinherited and the outcast: the revolution of love, the revolution of tenderness. From the manger, Jesus proclaims, in a meek yet powerful way, the need for sharing with the poor as the path to a more human and fraternal world in which no one is excluded or marginalized.”

So it’s good to stop for a moment now and then during the Christmas period and even if you don’t have a crib near you, you can imagine it in your mind and let it speak to you, consoling and giving hope, but also nudging us on to do our part to make this world a family shaped by the revolution of love where no one is in need and where tenderness is the order of the day.
